Day 1 - Chambéry
You are expected in the afternoon at your hotel in Chambéry, a city with a rich heritage nestled between the Chartreuse and Bauges mountains. Take the opportunity to explore the historic center, its charming streets and taste local specialties. It is here, in this former capital of the Dukes of Savoy, that your adventure through the Chartreuse will begin tomorrow.

Day 2 - Chambéry - Entremont Desert

You will have to leave Chambéry quite early, a great day awaits you! You start your ascent to the Entremont Desert, a small mountain village nestled in the preserved setting of the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park. You will cross peaceful forests, offering superb panoramas of the valley below and Mont Granier in the background. The authenticity of this family ski resort is ideal for an immersion in the Alpine landscapes.

Day 3 - Entremont Desert - Cirque de St-Même

Today you start the descent to St Pierre d'Entremont leaving behind the beautiful views of Mont Granier and you then take the direction of the Cirque de Saint-Même, famous for its waterfalls and impressive walls.

Day 4 - Cirque de St-Même - St Pierre de Chartreuse

You will have to leave early, but it will be one of the most beautiful days of your crossing with the ascent to Alpette des Dames before crossing the grandiose Hauts de Chartreuse Nature Reserve, the hiking paradise where you will have the feeling of being alone in the world surrounded by trees, beautiful limestone rocks and numerous marmots. You end your day in St Pierre de Chartreuse, a central and unmissable village in the mountains.

Day 5 - St Pierre de Chartreuse - Col de Porte
- From St-Pierre-de-Chartreuse to the Col de Porte (~7:30)
- Distance: 16km
- Height difference: 1000m
This day will take you up to the foothills of Charmant Som, one of the most beautiful peaks in the massif with its magnificent mountain pastures and its 360 degree view and you can even see the Grande Chartreuse Monastery from above (Possibility to do it by A/R +2km & 100D+). You reach the Col de Porte via the Montcheese ridges, which will offer you beautiful views of the surrounding peaks, in particular Chameaude, the highest point of the massif.

Day 6 - Loop around the Col de Porte (Chameaude)

- Distance: 15km
- Height difference: 740m
From the Col de Porte, you will make a loop to reach Sappey-en-Chartreuse, passing through the Emeindras de Dessus and enjoying superb views of the massif and Chamechaude. You will also have the option of going back and forth to the summit of Chamechaude (+4 km & +370 m D+), for those who want to add the highest point of the massif and a last ascent to the course.

Day 7 - Col de Porte -Grenoble
- From Col de Porte to Grenoble (~8h)
- Distance: 20km
- Height difference: 620m
To finish your beautiful Chartrousine adventure, you head for the Capital of the Alps. Before that, you climb the ridges to enjoy beautiful views of the Belledonne Massif and the Gresivaudan Valley. Then before going down to Grenoble, you will pass to the Fort of St Eynard and Bastille. You can shorten this stage and get to Grenoble in 3 different ways:
- From Le Sappey-en-Chartreuse by taking the bus and the N62 line (less 16km)
- From the Col de Vence by taking the bus and the N62 line (less 9km)
- At Bastille you can take the mythical bubbles (6,50€ - minus 3km)
End of your stay after this last stage in Grenoble.

Meeting point & Access
🚅 The starting point and the end point of this stay are accessible by train (Chambéry & Grenoble station)
This trip is itinerant starting from Chambéry and arriving from Grenoble. You are expected the day before your stay, in the afternoon, at your hotel in Chambéry.
This stay is customizable and flexible like all our stays in freedom. For example, you can start your stay directly with the first day of hiking, but you will have to arrive early in Chambéry to have time to hike to the Entremont Desert.
How do I access it?
Do not hesitate to use the train or carpooling as much as possible! 🙂🌿
🚗 By car: Take the A41 motorway from Lyon or Geneva to arrive directly in Chambéry. From the south, the A43 motorway connects you to Chambéry via Grenoble.
🚅 By train: Direct TGVs connect Chambéry to Paris in about 3 hours. TER trains provide regular connections with Lyon (1h15) and Grenoble (1h).
Level
This stay is classified level 4/5. It requires hiking several times a year and having already walked in the mountains, in reasonably technical environments. The stages are well sized, the objective is to discover the Chartreuse massif, a wild medium mountain range. The markup is very good accompanied by the topo via the app.

During your stay, you will be accommodated in guest rooms, cottages or in a hotel depending on availability.
You stay in rooms with bathroom in each room during the nights in a hotel or guest room.
However, in the nights in cottages, the bathroom will be shared most of the time. Sheets are provided, unless otherwise specified.
Depending on availability and the size of your group, a single room may be offered to you at certain stages of the stay, do not hesitate to let us know your request and we will do our best.

What type of shoes should I wear?
On our hiking trips, it is strongly recommended to choose shoes adapted to the terrain and the duration of the planned stages.
We recommend high-top shoes that hold the ankle well and are waterproof if possible. The sole must be in good condition and capable of adhering to technical and slippery surfaces.
Finally, and this is probably the most important point: your shoes must have been broken in beforehand, you must feel good from one shoe to the other. We do not recommend that you leave on a stay with completely new shoes.
What size backpack should I choose?
For your hikes, where the main luggage is taken care of by a carrier during the day, we advise you to choose a backpack with a capacity of 30 to 40 liters.
So you can put your things for the day, your picnic, a few snacks, and your water! For optimal comfort, we recommend a backpack with a waist belt, and well adapted to your size and morphology, which you have tested beforehand.
What should I carry in my day bag?
For a hassle-free hike, here's what you need to have in your backpack:
- Water: every hiker Must have at least 1.5 liters of water on him. Think of insulated bottles to keep the water fresh, it's very valuable 🙂
- Picnics and snacks: In the morning, remember to leave with your lunch picnic. If you have chosen the option, the host will give it to you in the morning, either at breakfast or when you leave. Also, remember to have a few snacks, such as cereal bars, fruit pastes, dried fruits, nuts,...
- First aid kit: Just in case, it is always advisable to leave with your first aid kit: bandages, compresses, disinfectants, personal medications,... also think of sunscreen!
- Your mobile phone: Even if the purpose of a hiking trip in nature is to disconnect and enjoy the nature around you, it is necessary to bring your charged mobile phone, and with a portable battery if possible. This will allow you to find your bearings and prevent emergency services in the event of an incident.
What clothes should I wear for the stay? Do I need to provide hot and cold weather?
Good question! Although we still hope that the weather is perfect for your stays (not too hot, not too cold, big blue skies, the dream!) , it's the only thing we can't predict!
The list of clothes to bring will obviously depend on the season, the destination and the altitude at which you will be confronted.
However, we recommend that you always bring clothing that can withstand the following conditions: rain, heat and cold, to avoid any eventuality.
The multi-layer system is the most recommended:
- T-shirt made of breathable material to wick away perspiration
- Light sweater or fleece (useful even in summer when temperatures drop in the evening and at altitude)
- Waterproof jacket (Goretex type) to protect from wind and rain.
For the bottom, bring shorts and pants. In fact, there are 2 in 1.
If your stay takes place at altitude, it is advisable to bring cold accessories, such as gloves, neck warmers and hats.
Finally, in order to protect yourself from the sun, it is essential to have a cap or hat, sunglasses and sunscreen!
It is important to be prepared for cold and hot weather, as well as for bad weather, it is part of the adventure! 😉
